Voilà le dernier disque de ce sympathique trio d’Austin, Texas, toujours composé d’Elana James, violon, chant, Whit Smith, guitare, chant et Jake Erwin, basse, backing vocals, renforcé pour l’occasion par le drumming de Damien Llanes. Contrairement à ce que le nom du groupe pourrait laisser penser, le Hot club of Cowtown a plus à voir avec le western swing (le disque débute d’ailleurs par une reprise de Bob Wills) qu’avec la musique Hot club à strictement parler. Pour faire court, ce trio ricain joue une sorte de country léger et aérien qui louche vers le jazz. Alternant instrumentaux enlevés (cf le nerveux Magic violin, trad interprété ici un peu à la manière de Joe Venuti/Eddie Lang) et chansons chantées tantôt par la douce voix d’Elana, tantôt par Whit avec des harmonies vocales aux petits oignons, le répertoire est majoritairement constitué de compos originales (7 sur 14) qui tiennent la route (cf le convaincant caribia d’Elana) en alternance avec quelques standards de jazz (cf la superbe version laid back de Georgia ou Someone to watch over me dans une interprétation ultra relax qui n’est pas sans faire penser à Susie Arioli), une reprise de Tom Waits et quelques trad réarrangés (cf Columbus stockade blues). Mêlant judicieusement jazz et country, le style coulé de Whit Smith à la guitare électrique évoque Les Paul ; ses interventions sont de petites merveilles de construction, d’équilibre et de swing (cf son chorus sur Heart of romain et les questions-réponses enlevées guitare-violon). Bien que plus country, le violon d’Elana n’est pas dénué de swing. Voilà un trio classieux conjuguant décontraction, musicalité et swing léger qui mériterait d’être largement connu dans notre beau pays !

This is the last disc of this friendly trio of Austin, Texas, always consists of Elana James, violin, vocals, Whit Smith, guitar and Jake Erwin, bass, backing vocals, reinforced for the occasion by the drumming of Damien Llanes. Contrary to what the group name might suggest, the Hot Club of Cowtown has more to do with the western swing (drive got underway with a cover of Bob Wills) with the Hot Club music, strictly speaking. In short, this trio Rican plays a kind of light and air which country ladle to jazz. Alternating instrumental removed (see the Magic nervous violin, translated here interpreted in much the way Joe Venuti / Eddie Lang) and songs sung sometimes by the sweet voice of Elana, sometimes by Whit with vocal harmonies with onions, directory consists mostly of original compositions (7 of 14) that hold the road (see the convincing Caribia Elana) alternating with a few jazz standards (see the beautiful laid back version of Georgia or Someone to watch over me in an ultra interpretation not relax without thinking of Susie Arioli), a cover of Tom Waits and some trad rearranged (see Columbus Stockade Blues). Judiciously combining jazz and country, style cast Whit Smith on guitar evokes Les Paul, his interventions are small marvels of construction, balance and swing (see the chorus on “Heart of Rome and the questions and answers removed guitar -violin). While most country music, the violin is not devoid of Elana swing. This is a classy trio combining relaxation, musicality and swing light that should be widely known in our beautiful country!
